  • Always make sure that every passenger in the vehicle is buckled up.
  • Slow down, especially in residential areas and in 20 MPH school zones.
  • Read and follow the drop-off zone directions provided in your school's packet or with registration materials.
  • Do not stop in the coned-off unloading zones designated only for buses or day-care drivers.
  • Never double-park in an unloading zone. This causes students and others to cross in front of other vehicles to get to or from the school building.
  • Remain with your car while loading and unloading students.  Do not leave a car parked in the drop-off zone.
  • Wait until the children and crossing guard have returned to the curb before entering the intersection.
  • Students should walk on the left side of the road facing traffic when meeting a school bus.

  • Form a line, wait for the bus to stop, and step into the bus one student at a time.

  • Remain seated while the bus is in motion and keep hands, arms, and all objects inside the windows.
  • Avoid loud talking, yelling, or making noise that may distract the bus driver.
  • Move away from the bus once outside. If you must cross the street, move forward of the bus so the driver can see you and signal to you when it is safe to cross.
  • Walk with young children or with a student who is new to the area, to and from school until they know the safe walking route.
  • Use the safe walking route provided by your school.
  • Teach children to walk in groups, obey signs, and always look both ways before crossing streets.
  • Make sure the driver sees you before crossing in front of a vehicle.
  • Check with your school for a good meeting place for siblings who walk to and from school together.
  • Watch for vehicles turning at intersections.
  • Emphasize that children must obey all crossing signs and crossing guards.

Note: In Utah, 160,000 students ride school buses more than 28 million miles to and from school each year. Nationally, 25 million children ride the school bus each day. The National Research Council statistics show school buses to be one of the safest forms of transportation. For every 100,000 passenger miles, school buses incur 0.01 deaths compared to 0.04 for passenger trains, 0.06 for scheduled airlines and 0.94 for passenger cars.
